Is TRT Right For Me?

Things to consider before pursuing testosterone replacement therapy

Who Should Get Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)?

If you suspect that you may have low levels of testosterone and that hormone replacement therapy might be beneficial to you, there are certain steps to take before pursuing treatment on your own. First, consider all the symptoms that you are experiencing. Even a subtle mood change such as increased irritability could be a sign that your hormone levels are out of balance. Do some research and take a note of everything that could point to a deficiency in testosterone. Before taking any concrete steps to receive testosterone replacement treatment, you should always consult your doctor first. It is only by doing a blood test that your doctor will be able to confirm if you are a good candidate for testosterone replacement therapy or not. After analyzing the results of your blood test, your doctor will be able to expertly guide you through the next steps to start restoring your health.

Indicators That You Might Need TRT

There are several symptoms that manifest in men with lower-than-average levels of testosterone (any levels less than 350ng/dL). Keep in mind that if you are experiencing any of the following issues, it very well could be caused by something other than a testosterone deficiency, but you should consider the possibility that hormone imbalance might be at the root of any of these problems.

Symptoms of Low T

The first and most publicized symptom of “low t” is low libido, or sexual desire. Males suffering from low testosterone may have erectile dysfunction and/or smaller testicles. Another potential symptom is recurring fatigue and low energy levels. It is not unheard of for men with low testosterone to sleep many hours in the day even after getting a good night’s rest. Next, men who suspect low testosterone levels may experience a decrease in muscle and bone mass as well as possibly gaining weight around the stomach and/or breast tissue areas. Hormone imbalance can also significantly affect mental health, potentially leading to anxiety, depression or irritability. Moreover, those affected can have difficulty focusing on specific tasks. Lastly, men with low testosterone levels can experience hair loss on their head, body and face. This is not a comprehensive list of all the possible manifestations of low testosterone, but if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should consider contacting your doctor about low t.

Who Should NOT Get TRT?
Due to specific medical conditions, there are some men who should not receive testosterone replacement therapy. Do not pursue treatment if you suffer from:

  • Breast/prostate cancer
  • Palpable prostate nodules
  • Erythrocytosis
  • Hyperviscosity
  • Untreated obstructive sleep apnea
  • Uncontrolled severe heart failure
  • Unstable severe congestive heart failure (stage III & IV)
